It’s been more than a year of hard work but we can finally say it:

+Bugfixing: A rare and uncommon bug (reported by a Patron) at the beginning of chapter 3 which causes some battle system features (including the HUD) to get deactivated. We’ve fixed it. We didn’t found what causes the malfunction but we’ve created a system to fix it.

+Bugfix: A bug in chapter 1 causing all doors in a map to close letting you trapped has been fixed.

With Mai gone, Nina is On

After a long time after the APFM success”, we’re back to get you informed about some stuff we’re doing:

APFM is cancelled (but not dead). The overall lack of interest towards the game made us to take this decission. Sorry for the people who really liked it (if there’s any).

And because it looks like we’re not getting any profit from making videogames, we’re gonna make the games we really like to do.

Project Nina: The game’s been progressing little by little and detail on detail it’s getting its shape even tho it’s a hard and long way. In the near future we’ll inform about the current status and share more info on it.

Patreon: Changing the project we’re working on also ended in a change on our empty Patreon which is now focused on Project Nina.

There’s still some stuff to be done in it like Milestone Goals and Rewards but there’s already some basics on it.

Important: Patreon along with the UE4 forum’s topic will be our main way to keep everyone informed about the game progress.


Asset Store: We’ve been working on this subject too. This was almost abandoned since we released our first and only asset in the Unity Asset Store.

The Aerial Colosseum: It’s been updated to work with Unity 5 using his PBR system. You can buy this asset from here: http://u3d.as/94J


Selling Mai: As we said before, APFM is cancelled (but not dead) and this is mainly for 2 reasons:

  • First, while talking about the Asset Store, we’re going to release some packs with the music from the chapter I, along with some new track that didn’t make it to the first chapter. The first pack is already on sale. And you can buy it (and also listen some samples) here: http://u3d.as/jB4

  • Second, we decided to “give” the game to our friends at VersusX. They were quite interested in the game to make and adult version of it.

The game’s new name is now Punished Mai. If there’s success with it, will open the small hope that some day there may be a ’normal’ version of the game.

A Punishment for Mai v1.2

Hello everyone!


Today we bring you this new update adding some important bugfixes (for the 1.1 version) and some new addons.

This one took us a few days to finish because this time we wanted to test it a few times just to make sure it’s working properly.

We heard what people who played it said and decided to add some new aspects to it to make it more comfortable for people who find it hard or slow.

Release Notes for  v1.2

  • Bugfix: When trying to start a new game with the Lighting System disabled in a previous game (the tempfix in 1.1 was to edit the file “profile.ini” and replace NoAtmosphere=1 with NoAtmosphere=0. this is no longer necessary)*


  • Bugfix: Trying to save when the flashlight has been used atleast once will corrupt the savedata and will throw you an error that won’t even let you run the game again until you delete that savedata.**


  • Addon: Enable/Disable the battle commands in any moment. Got reports from people finding it hard to examine the environment using the same button to examine and to attack. Especially with the gun where you end up wasting ammo. So now you can press X in your keyboard to enable/disable the battle commands. You’ll hear a sound whenever you press it and the HUD Faceset will change color: Blue means that battle commands are disabled so you can examine all you want, you won’t attack. Red means that battle commands are enabled so you can fight back again to those damn monsters.


  • Addon: The Driver will now warn you about the dangerous it is to go to the underground cave at the beggining of the game (even if its your mission objective, he recommends you to visit the other places and also to fight some monsters to try and get a new level before going there).


  • Addon: The Illumination for the Underground Cave has been lighten up a bit just to ease up find your way in there.


  • Addon: A new performance boost option has been added to the Pause Menu (ALT): Footstep Sounds. You can enable/disabled them whenever you like. Disabling them will give you a better performance because you disabling an action that gets executed in every frame as it has to get updated.


  • Addon: A new difficulty level: Easy. You can select it at the beggining of a new game, just after selecting the screen mode - or - You can also change it anytime you want from within the game in the Pause Menu (ALT). this mode is for those people who find the game too hard to beat it as it is. You’ll get your power increased aswell as your defense. Also with the shield you’ll get covered in any direction no matter where your facing when using it.


  • Update: The Title screen has been updated to reflect the new version. So now you should see v1.2 if you updated to it correctly.


  • Update: The Control Scheme shown in the intro of the game and also the one shown on the wall of the motel


* Note: If you ever enable the lighting system again. You’ll get a wrong illumination surface (don’t worry), so to fix it up just change the room you’re in and it’ll fix automatically.


** Note: If you have the Flashlight Turned ON and you enable the lighting system back, maybe you wont see the flashlight. Just turn it OFF and ON again and it’ll fix automatically.


Known Bugs

  • Grenades aren’t working. You shouldn’t even bother trying them out as they’re disabled. You throw it and then after some seconds it just dissapears and no explosion or anything.

IMPORTANT

Due to Gamejolt/IndieDB changing automatically the name of the .exe file. Please make sure to call the .exe exactly as the folder name where you have the game installed. Example: C:/Games/A Punishment for Mai/Game.exe   - You have to rename the .exe file you download for the version 1.2 from A-Punishment-for-Mai.exe to: A Punishment for Mai.exe (getting rid of those -).

Update 1.1 for A Punishment for Mai

Release Notes for 1.1.0:

  • Added a new option in the pause menu (ALT) to turn ON/OFF the lighting system to aleviate the overloading on not so new CPUs. This should fix the lowfps / lag in some zones.*
  • We know that this will destroy the atmosphere but the gameplay and that people can play it as best as possible comes first.


* There is a small bug generated with this new option that have an easy fix but nothing i can fix on my end. If you turn OFF the system and enter in a new zone (that never had the system ON while in there) and then you turn ON the system, you’ll get the illumination of the previous room. to fix that just get back to the previous zone and reenter with the system ON and everything will work as expected. But if you turn the system OFF is because you’re PC can’t carry with the system so you shoul.dn’t turn it ON again so there’s no bug :P

For now you you can only download the update from Gamejolt because IndieDB needs approval first.

So here in the left-toolbar, you have the button to go and download it from Gamejolt.

The surprise!

There has been a lot of posts, information, memories, surprises and of course, A Punishment for Mai. But there is one last announcement we want to do… Better if I just show you this video and then add some data:













  • This game is just started but has very advanced aspects, like the script.
  • It’s a JRPG.
  • The game will be made in Unreal Engine 4 which will become our first 3D game.
  • If we’re lucky enough it may be released for PC, Mac and Linux.
  • What’s shown in the trailer could be considered CG. (We hope that with your support in patreon, the game can have some more of these ‘GCs’ to show the most important moments of its story).
  • The characters’ look in the game will be pleasantly familiar if you know a certain JRPG.
  • Project Nina is just a codename, the game still has no final name, because Nina (the name it had before) is now 'taken’.

How to Play:

A Punishment for Mai is keyboard controlled. Here is a list:

←↑→↓ - Move the character through the maps.
W - Change the playable character when the 2 mains are together.
Q - Open the Menu.
A - Use the Shield when equipped.
S - Use the equipped item if there is any.
D - Use the equipped Skill if there is any and there’s enough MN.
Z - Attack/Shot, Examine, Select, Pick up and Throw.
X - Cancel.
SHIFT - Sprint, Aim.
CTRL - Turn the Flashlight ON/OFF.
ALT - Pause the game.
F5 - Turn the Fullscreen ON/OFF.
F6 - Change the Screen Aspect Ratio.

Story:

Mai is a 28 years old young woman with a sad and dark past from which she remember almost nothing but a deep pain.
Without knowing how, or why, Mai wake up one day in a motel room, wondering, she comes out only to find that she’s in a place that she never saw on her life and which has nothing to do with her usual reality.
The girl, who initially thought she was alone in this city, ends up discovering that there is more life than she thought: monsters, demons, strange people and, last but not least, a kind of sect of people in cassocks who seem to be the ‘lords of the place ’. Under such conditions, Mai, plucks up courage and starts to seek for a way to get out of there, but unfortunately for her, after several months of searching she finds nothing.
However, someone has been watching Mai most of this time, a mysterious man who appears infront of her. He calls himself the ’Driver’ and hides his face behind a mask.
Despite the initial distrust, Mai has no choice but to accept the help of the ’Driver’, which, promises he will help her get out of the town.
Time passes and Mai begins to lose patience, strange dreams beset her, surviving in the town is becoming more dangerous, the doubts of what the town is and why is she there and above all that, a deep sense of sadness, are making the she starts to doubt on his sanity and to top places of her previous life started to appear in the town, including the house where she lived before appearing here.
All seems lost, but one day the ’Driver’ appears and tells her it’s time to leave the town, but first she shall pass a test…
And this is where our journey begins with Mai in the pursuit of a way out of this cursed town.

How to Play:

Make your way through space circuits destroying all the asteroids, enemies and obstacles of all kinds in your path.
To do so you will have at your disposal, in addition to your reflexes, more than 10 kinds of Mejoras, over 5 different types of weapons and a total of 6 Automejoras that you can unlock if you manage to win a stage.
You should try to finish each stage with as many points as possible but watch out, time is ticking and the enemies will try to stop you at any cost.

        In the very distant future, mankind has colonized and or explored much of the known universe today. But humans still act the same way.

    Alex was one of the best racing drivers, until a tragic accident made ??him leave his successful career and live like a bum. One day two strangers appeared in front of him and using force and blackmail forced him to participate again in the Intergalactic Race which takes place this year.

Status Ailments

This time I’ll talk about ailments on A Punishment for Mai:

There are skills that can cause ailments in characters and enemies. These ailments can be both positive and negative.
All ailments disappear over time depending on a percentage.
The item called pill can heal the majority of the negative ailments.
The skill called Purification can heal the majority of the negative ailments.
When our character is inflicted with an ailment you’ll see it reflected in the HUD, in the red box marked area on the image:
